Krewe of Harambee Scholarship Supports Children of Single Parents

A political consultant with Decimal Inc. for more than 30 years, Lynn Braggs has worked with notable politicians such as the honorable Ollie S. Tyler, the first African American woman to become mayor of Shreveport, Louisiana. Lynn Braggs is also co-founder of the Krewe of Harambee, a non-profit organization that participates in various community service events.

Named for the Swahili word that means “Let’s pull together,” the Krewe of Harambee encourages the participation of minority populations in local Mardi Gras parades. Additionally, the organization provides a number of academic scholarships to students facing adverse circumstances. The Krewe of Harambee Scholarship, awarded to three high school seniors who are living in single-parent homes, invites students to submit applications that include essays on the topic of “How I Made It Against All Odds.”

The Krewe selects three students each year, honoring them at the Martin Luther King Hopes and Dreams Breakfast. Scholarship funds are made possible through the generous donations of sponsors such as AT&T, Yokem Toyota, and Jacqueline Scott & Associates Law Firm.

 

Krewe of Harambee Supports the Community

Based in Shreveport, Louisiana, Lynn Braggs is a political consultant with Decimal, Inc., who draws on three decades of experience. In addition to his professional endeavors, Lynn Braggs is a founding member of the Krewe of Harambee.

Since 2000, Krewe of Harambee (KOH) has sought to increase the number of minorities who become involved in Mardi Gras celebrations. Dedicated to various charitable endeavors, Krewe of Harambee aims to raise awareness about conditions such as breast cancer.

The organization regularly hosts the event “Harambee Goes Pink,” which aims to celebrate breast cancer survivors. In 2019, KOH held this event at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, which featured a speech by Dr. Joyce Feagin, a physician who treats patients with cancer and blood disorders.

In addition to supporting causes such as breast cancer, KOH members routinely participate in the “Paint Your Heart Out” initiative. They donate their time to paint and provide repairs to homeowners in need.

 

Krewe of Harambee Gives Back to the Community

Longtime political consultant Lynn Braggs has led Decimal, Inc., in Shreveport, Louisiana, for more than three decades. In addition to his work on elections in Louisiana, Lynn Braggs gives back to his community as a supporter of local organizations such as Krewe of Harambee, where he serves as a founding member.

Founded in 2000, Krewe of Harambee (KOH) promotes minority participation in Mardi Gras celebrations and provides services to the local community. Some of the group's charitable activities and programs include home improvement projects and the Krewe of Harambee Scholarships.

Each year, KOH members come together for the annual Paint Your Heart Out event. Benefitting individual members of the Shreveport community, this day of service provides new paint and other minor restoration to homeowners in need.

Another major event at KOH is the Hope and Dreams Scholarship Breakfast. The event honors the three annual winners of the Krewe of Harambee Scholarships, which are given to outstanding high school students from single-parent households.

Along with providing scholarships and overseeing home improvement service projects, KOH hosts activities in support of sickle-cell anemia research and breast cancer awareness. The organization also holds senior citizen bingo nights and supports the Shreveport Regional Arts Council's Christmas in the Sky event.
